Andrew Greenwood

 

 

 

Andrew is the Festival’s new Artistic Director.  He was born in Todmorden and read music at Clare College, Cambridge.  He has been a member of the Music Staff of the Royal Opera House and Chorus Master at WNO, a post he held until 1990.  He has since conducted regularly at WNO, ENO, Oper der Stadt, Köln and the Royal Danish Opera.  From 1996 until 2002 Andrew was Music Director of ETO, where he conducted many of their most successful productions, notably Fidelio, Daughter of the Regiment, The Rake's Progress and La traviata.  

He has conducted the UK’s major symphony orchestras including the Philharmonia, RPO, City of London Sinfonia, Ulster Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia.  He is a frequent broadcaster with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Concert Orchestra.  In Europe, a successful début with the Rotterdam Philharmonic led to an invitation to return to conduct further concerts.  Recent engagements include Iphigénie en Tauride for WNO, concerts with the RPO and Collegium Musicum, Copenhagen, Mahler's Fourth Symphony in Istanbul and Albert Herring at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.

For Buxton Festival Andrew has conducted La Périchole (2002), Maria Padilla (2003), The Merry Wives of Windsor (2005) and Roberto Devereux (2007)
