Dame Janet Smith

Dame Janet Smith was born in Stockport and worked as a barrister in Manchester for 20 years, specialising in personal injury, industrial disease and clinical negligence. In 1992 she was appointed a Judge of the High Court and, given her specialty in medical negligence, was asked to chair the Shipman Inquiry, which lasted from 2001 to 2005.  She was promoted to the Court of Appeal and now holds one of the most senior positions in the judiciary as a Lady Justice of Appeal.

Her legal career started after ten years as a housewife and mother.  After bringing up her three children she went on to read law by a correspondence course and was called to the Bar in 1972.  She is a highly experienced and well respected High Court Judge and her work is of outstanding calibre.  She is a grandmother of three and enjoys music and gardening.

Dame Janet has a long association with Buxton Festival, having lived in the Buxton from 1967 to 1980.  Her great love for opera and music has seen her attend every Festival since it started in 1979.
