Dame Janet
Smith was born in Stockport and worked as a barrister in
Manchester for 20 years, specialising in personal injury,
industrial disease and clinical negligence. In 1992 she was
appointed a Judge of the High Court and, given her specialty
in medical negligence, was asked to chair the Shipman
Inquiry, which lasted from 2001 to 2005. She was promoted
to the Court of Appeal and now holds one of the most senior
positions in the judiciary as a Lady Justice of Appeal.
Her legal career started after ten years as a
housewife and mother. After bringing up her three children
she went on to read law by a correspondence course and was
called to the Bar in 1972. She is a highly experienced and
well respected High Court Judge and her work is of
outstanding calibre. She is a grandmother of three and
enjoys music and gardening.
Dame Janet has a long association with Buxton
Festival, having lived in the Buxton from 1967 to 1980. Her
great love for opera and music has seen her attend every
Festival since it started in 1979.
