Mark Burns grew up in Buxton and trained at the Royal Northern College of Music. He now works extensively as a Director and Assistant and has a keen interest in opera education regularly working with The Royal Opera, Buxton International Festival, Glyndebourne, Opera North, Royal Academy Opera, Bury Court Opera, Silent Opera, Opera Danube, West Green House and Grimeborn with directors such as Francis Matthews, Daisy Evans, Julia Burbach and Caroline Clegg. Mark recently directed Madama Butterfly and The Pirates of Penzance for Ormond Opera and will return to direct Carmen for the company this Autumn. He has also directed La Cenerentola for the London Young Sinfonia at the Bedford Park Festival and Parsifal for Elemental Opera. Mark is also Artistic Director of The Opera Box, a new company producing operas with small casts and staged song-cycle repertoire. They staged their first production, Open the Box, last September with the Totally Thames Festival in London and they will return with a new production of Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor this Autumn along with their series of staged recitals, which runs throughout the year.
