Lancashire born, Alwyn Mellor took the world by storm combining both Italian and German repertoires, assailing the heights of acclaim as she became one of most sought after Wagnerian sopranos. Her combination of superb control and vocal stamina with acutely intelligent musicality and stage presence have justifiably taken her from Seattle’s Wagner Cycles, recorded with Asher Fisch, all over Europe and the USA in the roles of Brunnhilde, Isolde and many others. Wagner’s exquisite Wesendonck Lieder are a glance into his little acknowledged tender creativity, full of love for the woman who composed the very texts he set but he knew was unattainable, and make a subtle partner for Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, equally gentle but in a way much more deeply inward looking and resigned. Samuel Barber remains a much under rated composer, and his songs are miniatures of insight and melodic beauty.
