Martin Pearce

About the event

Martin Pearce tells the story of Sir Maurice Oldfield, the Derbyshire farmer’s son who rose to the highest rank in MI6, despite harbouring a secret that would have seen his career ended before it started. Humble yet grand, taciturn yet gregarious, formidable yet gullible, Oldfield was an accomplished historian, organist and liar; a deeply religious family man, yet a rampant homosexual with a fondness for young men;  the first Chief to be named and pictured in the press and often alleged by them to be the model for the screen versions of both Ian Fleming’s ‘M’ and John Le Carré’s George Smiley.
