Francis trained at Wimbledon School of Art. His designs have been seen nationally and internationally.
Recent theatre includes The Weir (Lyceum, Edinburgh), Big Maggie (Gaiety, Dublin) The Importance of Being Earnest (Gate, Dublin, Spoleto Festival Charleston, Kiss Me Kate (Dortmund); Talking Heads (Theatre Royal Bath & touring), Oklahoma! (national tour), Loserville (Leeds and West End), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Leeds), Druid Shakespeare for Druid, Galway & Lincoln Centre, New York, for whom he has previously designed many productions, seen in Ireland, London and New York, including The Beauty Queen of Leenane on Broadway; The Price and An Ideal Husband (Gate, Dublin); Aristocrats (Abbey, Dublin) and Private Lives (Edinburgh). Productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company include Love’s Labours Lost, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Lieutenant of Innishmore; Written on The Heart.
Recent opera includes Eugene Onegin, Samson and Delila, Peter Grimes (Grange Park), Vert, Vert (Garsington), Noyes Fludde (Lowestoft), Rusalka (Nürnberg, Monte Carlo), The Adventures of Pinocchio (Opera North, Bonn, Moscow); and many more in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and North America. Also for Buxton: Orfeo ed Euridice, Fortunio, Maria di Rohan, Luisa Miller, Lucrezia Borgia, Roberto Devereux.
Awards include two Irish Times Awards, Boston Globe and Critics Circle Awards. His designs for the opera Pinocchio were nominated for Germany’s ‘Der Faust’ Prize.
Future work includes La fanciulla del West (Grange Park), The Beauty Queen of Leenane (Ireland, Los Angeles, New York).
