Julian Tovey was born in North Yorkshire. He trained at the RNCM after graduating from Exeter College, Oxford. Notable appearances have included Winston Smith 1984 (La Scala, Milan), Orest Elektra (with Deborah Polaski and New York Philharmonic Orchestra, under Lorin Maazel), Albert in the world premiere of Fabio Vacchi’s Lo Stesso Mare (Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari), the title role in Wozzeck (Theater St Gallen and Israeli Opera) and Trinity Moses in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (Israeli Opera). He has sung for the Royal Opera, English National Opera, Opera North and Garsington Opera and abroad for the Canadian Opera Company, Flemish Opera, L’Opera National du Rhin, Hessisches Staatstheater, Wiesbaden, Netherlands Opera and the Palau de les Artes, Valencia.
In concert he has performed with the RLPO, RSNO, RPO, Huddersfield Choral Society, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra and RTE Concert Orchestra in diverse repertoire including Brahms’ Requiem, Messiah, Carmina Burana, Candide, Emile South Pacific and Faust in Schumann’s Faust Szenen. He has premiered works by Derek Bernel, Edward Rushton and Judith Bingham.
