Phil was born in Dorset and attended the Thomas Hardye School where he began his vocal training and sang with the Chapel Choir. He obtained a BA (hons) Degree in Music Studies at Leeds College of Music studying singing with Christian Immler and Jane Anthony. Phil has appeared regularly as an oratorio soloist, recitalist and professional chorister across the north of England whilst studying with Paul Nilon.
Phil has performed several roles with ‘Young Opera Venture’ including The Count in The Marriage of Figaro and Papageno in The Magic Flute. He has been a Lay Clerk for the cathedrals of Bradford and Manchester and performed with the BBC Singers. He has delivered education programmes for Opera North, Hull University, Leeds Lieder + and NHS training Academy and has directed choirs for Leeds Beckett University, Music in Offices and Bradford Academy.
Phil has recently moved to London to study with Alex Ashworth and Audrey Hyland at the Royal Academy of Music. Here he has appeared as Kalenik in the Royal Academy Opera production of May Night, as Rambaldo in scenes from La rondine and as Minskman in scenes from Flight (Dove); performed in a masterclass with Dennis O’Neill; and delivered education projects at Hackney Empire and Glyndebourne.
When not teaching or singing, Phil enjoys playing the piano accordion at sessions and folk festivals and walking out in the open.
