Buxton Festival 2003 - Semele
Based on a libretto by one of the wickedest wits of the eighteenth century, William Congreve, Semele combines some of Handel's most beautiful music with biting satirical insights into lust, ambition, power and marital infidelity. Handel skilfully demonstrates the mortal danger of getting too close to the heart of power and challenging the mythic hierarchy.
